Technology Description Strength Dexterity Vision Reactions Hearing
Type of technology and what it helps with
Hill start assist Prevents car from rolling away when trying to pull away on an up or down gradient
Parking assist Lets the car steer itself into a parking space with little input from the driver
Information systems Gives the driver additional information to help with a specific task, eg satellite navigation, blind spot detection
Night vision Increases visibility of the road ahead, typically by using infra-red sensors which detect heat
Blind spot detection Detects other vehicles on the driver's side and rear blind spots; can give audio alarm
Assisted or power steering Less effort needed from the driver to turn the wheels.
Lane change assistance When changing lane: monitors the areas to the left and right of the car and up to 50 metres behind it; warns you of potential hazards using flashing warning lights in the exterior mirrors
Pedestrian detection Sensors detect the presence of people (and animals). This can be used to minimise any potential impact
Lane departure warning Used on major arterial routes: warns driver when the vehicle begins to move unintentionally out of its lane. Some systems take control to stay in lane
Emergency brake assist Compensates for deficiencies in the driver's action on the brake pedal
Driver drowsiness detection Monitors driver and alerts them when their behaviour indicates drowsiness
Adaptive cruise control Helps to avoid accidents by always keeping the vehicle at a safe distance from the traffic ahead
Intelligent speed adaptation Monitors the local speed limit and adjusts the car's speed accordingly
Emergency assistance system Alerts the emergency services in the event of an accident
